About the service

Southport and Ormskirk hospitals have a Learning Disability and Autism Practitioner who will support patients with a diagnosis of Learning Disabilities and / or Autism when they attend the hospitals, to ensure all reasonable adjustments are in place to help facilitate positive experiences and outcomes.

Please make contact if you require advice / support regarding the care of a patient with a learning disability and / or autism.

The Learning Disability and Autism Practitioner can provide support and advice on:

  • Providing support and guidance to the patients, families, and carers while they are in hospital
  • Helping staff and patients to co-ordinate planned care
  • Support planning of safe discharges
  • Recognising and supporting to implement reasonable adjustments
  • Source and provide accessible information
  • Planning for admissions and outpatient appointments
  • Advice on Hospital Passports
  • Ensuring all Patients with a Learning Disability and / or Autism have an alert placed on Electronic Patient Records
  • Advice in relation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 for Patients with Learning Disabilities who may lack capacity to consent to treatment
  • Provide guidance for staff teams if a patient is anxious about treatment / provide distraction therapy / pictorial communication to aid understanding
