Paediatric Assessment and Observation Unit
The Paediatric Assessment and Observation Unit (PAOU) provides an assessment and observation of acute medical illness prior to discharge home or admission to the inpatient ward.
It also provides a day service for medical investigations and procedures of children and young people.
Referrals from PAOU can be made to the Community Children’s Nursing Outreach Team or to specialist nurses to provide support and care in the home environment if appropriate.

GPs or midwives may refer to the Paediatric Assessment and Observation Unit via the paediatric on-call medical team through the hospital switchboard.
