Finding out you’re pregnant
As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, you can refer yourself directly to us by telephoning 01695 656924. There’s no need to see your GP.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to start taking your folic acid (400mcgs a day).

- Where to find our services
The majority of services are based at Ormskirk hospital but antenatal clinics and ultrasound scanning are also performed at Southport. Maternity services at Ormskirk are situated in a purpose-built women’s and children’s unit.
Antenatal outpatients

These areas are situated on Level 2 of the hospital. The accommodation is bright and spacious and facilities are for women attending for care in early pregnancy and antenatal care.
Maternity Assessment Unit
This is situated on Level 4 of the hospital.
Delivery suite
The delivery suite is situated next door to the Antenatal Ward on Level 4 and includes a purpose-built theatre, back-up theatre and a high dependency unit.
Maternity Ward
The Maternity Ward is on Level 3.
Neonatal unit
The neonatal unit is situated next door to the Maternity Ward on Level 3 providing easy access to women who are inpatients and whose babies are being treated on the unit.
Bereavement suite
In the sad event of complications during pregnancy leading to the loss of a baby, there is a bereavement suite situated on the antenatal ward. - Ward accommodation
We aim to provide care tailored to the needs of you and your baby. Postnatal care is given within a safe, friendly, caring and welcoming environment.
You will be looked after by our team of midwives, specialist midwives, maternity and health care assistants. There is also access to our doctors and consultants 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We provide a mixture of single occupancy, two-bedded, three-bedded and a four-bedded wards.
Rooms are light and airy and each bedside cabinet is stocked with fresh bath towels and cot linen. All have bedside TVs and integrated phones with internet access (pre-pay system).
We offer a daily meal ordering service and unlimited access to hot and cold refreshments.
All our maternity and neonatal wards are secure and all babies have identification bands and wear a security tag.
We have a rooming in policy whereby your baby stays with you at all times to promote bonding.
We will be able to support you through your feeding choice. In addition, we have a team of breastfeeding peer support workers that attend the ward and can visit you at home on discharge for extra breastfeeding support.
Our health care assistants are an invaluable part of the team providing bathing demonstrations and giving support. Our midwives and maternity care assistants discuss aftercare for you and your baby to promote your health and wellbeing.
In the event that your baby may need the support of our Special Care Baby Unit, care is provided within a close proximity allowing parents to have easy, close access.

- Maternity Assessment Unit
The Maternity Assessment Unit is here to provide reassurance to women with pregnancy complications or maternal concerns. We are open 8am-8pm Monday to Sunday and operate on a self-referral basis or via referrals from community midwives/GPs and antenatal clinics.
We also undertake glucose tolerance tests, pre-operative assessments for women who will be having planned Caesarean section, a weekly anaesthetic clinic and ultrasound scans for community midwife referrals.
