Diabetes expert Professor May Ng OBE, from Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, has been chosen to deliver a prestigious national lecture in recognition of improvements she has delivered in patient care nationally and globally.
The Arnold Bloom Named Lecture is awarded to a healthcare professional who has contributed significantly to improving the quality of clinical care for people with diabetes.
The keynote lecture, to be delivered at this year’s Diabetes UK Professional Conference, is an exclusive insight into the latest research and understanding about diabetes treatment and care. It forms an integral component of the conference programme and recognises May’s outstanding contribution to the field.
Talking about her lecture she said: “It has been more than 100 years since the hormone insulin was first isolated and used as a life-saving treatment for people with type 1 diabetes.
“Yet, affordable insulin remains a challenge for many people who need it. Health systems in low-middle-income countries lack universality and healthcare coverage for diabetes such as access to insulin and blood glucose monitoring either does not exist or is limited. More global efforts are needed to upskill healthcare professionals and support children and young people with type 1 diabetes from diagnosis to adulthood as the first steps to bridging the type 1 diabetes gaps in many low-middle-income countries’’.
She added: “I feel deeply privileged to be awarded the Arnold Bloom Named Lecture award at this year’s Diabetes UK professional conference. It will be an honour to share the work of closing the type 1 diabetes gaps in low-middle-income countries in Southeast Asia.”
Professor Ng OBE is a multi-award-winning paediatrician and has led on many national and international initiatives in the UK and internationally. She has published more than 200 research papers and written three books – ‘A guide to type 1 diabetes management, technology and everything else you need to know; ‘A Journey With Brendan’ and ‘Me and My Hormones’.
She is Chair of the UK Association of Children’s Diabetes Clinicians, Chair of the NIHR Clinical research Group and Diabetes Research Steering Group for Children and Young People, Officer for Research for the Royal College of Paediatrics, Chair of the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) E-learning and sits on the International Society of Peadiatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) Advisory Council.
May is also the voluntary Chief Medical Advisor for www.Action4Diabetes.org, a UK-based charity providing life-saving insulin, diabetes equipment and education to children in Southeast Asia since 2015 and is responsible for providing advice, training and educational support for healthcare professionals in South East Asia, leading on clinical, research and educational projects with other healthcare professionals in the region.
