About the service
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a programme designed to specifically assist people with chronic lung conditions through exercise and education.
It has been shown to improve exercise tolerance, mobility, reduce breathlessness and improve self-confidence in people who suffer with chronic chest conditions.
The programme is physical activity training aimed to target individual rehabilitation needs. This includes aerobic and strength training exercise as well as balance, endurance and flexibility.
In addition to this, there is an educational component that family/carers can attend along with the patient this aims to improve understanding of the respiratory condition and treatments available.
There are options to attend only the education sessions, attend virtual appointments or be prescribed a home exercise programme.
The service is led is a specialist physiotherapists; the team includes physiotherapists and assistant practitioners. The education sessions are led by the relevant specialists and include respiratory nurses, pharmacists, dieticians and occupational therapists.

- Where and how to get help
Assessments take place at Ormskirk hospital or, if you prefer, virtually. Face to face classes are held in the physiotherapy department on Mondays and Fridays.
Referrals can be made by consultants, GPs (via e-referral) or any health care professional.
Patients can self-refer and a letter will be sent to their GP.
