Our Services A - Z - Women’s health services
About the service
We provide consultant-led gynaecology and maternity services in a modern and friendly environment, mostly at Ormskirk hospital.
The advanced surgical techniques used by our expert team mean you should get better quicker and spend less time recovering from your procedure.
Our gynaecology assessment bay allows women to refer themselves directly if they have a gynaecological problem that requires immediate attention. We also have an early pregnancy assessment unit for women with complications such as bleeding in early pregnancy.
Women who are referred to us urgently with possible gynaecological cancer are seen and assessed in our rapid access clinic within two weeks of referral. We can provide further diagnostics on the same day, if appropriate.
Our maternity team aim to support your choices throughout your pregnancy and labour. Within our delivery suite we have three active birth/midwifery-led care rooms and two birthing pools.
We also have a team of doctors available if needed. We provide a 24-hour epidural service and have a neonatal unit for babies with additional needs.

Women’s health physiotherapy
The women’s physiotherapy service provides physiotherapy assessment and input to ladies requiring our services across the surgical or maternity wards.
- Gynaecology
Physiotherapy may be required for patients attending Ormskirk hospital for major gynaecological surgery and is typically based on G ward.
Physiotherapy may include post-operative acute respiratory and mobility assessments and intervention. We aim to promote function and independence following surgery. When required the physiotherapy team works closely with the nursing and social work colleagues to ensure appropriate social support is available on discharge.
For patients attending out-patient gynaecology and urogynaecology we have a dedicated pelvic health physiotherapy service available at both sites, based in the physiotherapy out-patient departments. Sometimes we can only offer care at one site due to clinical needs.
Conditions we can treat:
- Urinary incontinence
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Bowel incontinence or obstructed defaecation (difficulty emptying bowels)
- Sexual dysfunction where there is a pelvic floor dysfunction cause
Your doctor in the outpatient clinic can refer you or you can access the service via your own GP. Ask the GP to use the e-referral process to the physiotherapy pelvic floor clinic.
- Obstetrics
Physiotherapy input on the maternity ward is currently limited to assistance with respiratory or mobility problems.
For musculo-skeletal problems (e.g. pelvic girdle pain) in the antenatal period please speak with your midwife or GP for a referral to the physiotherapy out-patient services.
If you have a pelvic floor problem post-natal, then your doctor from out-patients or your GP can refer you six weeks after your delivery. You may find information at this website useful thepogp.co.uk.
