Our Services A - Z - Wheelchair services

About the service

This is a specialist Wheelchair Service for patients registered with GPs in Chorley and South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Southport and Formby patients have a separate service provided by Mersey Care.

We are a community-based service and see adults and children who are permanently disabled resulting in them being completely immobile indoors as well as outdoors and who need to use a wheelchair for all their mobility. This is a therapy-led service.

The Wheelchair Assessment Team is a multidisciplinary therapy team of occupational therapists, assistant practitioners, therapy assistants and engineers.

Following assessment, recommendations will be made via a Wheelchair Service prescription and support plan.

The service offers personal wheelchair budgets which means the individual then has a choice of provision – that is to have a wheelchair free of charge from the NHS or to opt for provision via a third party provider.

For those people who opt for a wheelchair to be loaned free of charge, the NHS provides a free repair service.
