Our Services A - Z - Cardiac Rehabilitation

About the service

BACPR Accreditation LogoCardiac Rehabilitation is a nationally recognised programme aimed at helping people get back to as normal and as active a life as possible following a cardiac event or procedure. This includes patients who have experienced a heart attack (Myocardial Infarction), had a PCI/Stent (Coronary Angioplasty), heart surgery (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Valve, Heart transplant, Adult Congenital Heart Defects), a diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease or Heart Failure and some patients with implantable devices.

It is an individualised comprehensive programme which can involve gym sessions or other tailored exercise and educational sessions, covering a variety of topics surrounding heart health. The programme aims to support patients and their families in helping them to understand and self-manage their condition, promoting positive lifestyle changes and addressing cardiac risk factors.

This follow up service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Cardiac Specialist Nurses, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, Dietitians and Occupational therapists and is offered at both Southport and Ormskirk Hospital site.

Research has shown that by attending a Cardiac Rehabilitation programme you can reduce the risk of having another cardiac event or being re-admitted to hospital.

This programme can have a positive impact on your wellbeing and quality of life.
