Overview/Background:
Dr Saunders undertook a science degree before commencing medicine. He qualified from University of Liverpool Medical School in 1998.
He subsequently undertook specialist Diabetes and Endocrinology training in the Mersey Deanery, gaining a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Liverpool.
He then worked as consultant physician at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust before moving to Warrington and Halton hospitals where he worked for 13 years.
Interests
Dr Saunders specialises in Type 1 diabetes and in particular insulin pump technology and the young adults/transition service. He collaborates closely with Prof May Ng in this area.
He is also keen on the integration of technology such as Insulin pumps and CGMS and hybrid closed loop monitoring into routine diabetes care.
He has a particular interest in sports and exercise in diabetes, particularly with keen amateur and semi-professional/professional athletes and previously ran a separate diabetes and exercise clinic. Within endocrinology he is interested in thyroid dysfunction.
